In an electric underfloor heating system, a series of electrical wires or heating mats are installed beneath your flooring. It’s usually placed on top of a layer of floor insulation, to ensure the heat travels upwards rather than down. The heating wires are then connected to your mains supply and it will also include a sensor to help regulate the temperature. You can then use a thermostat to control the temperature and turn the system on or off. Another insulation layer on top of the underfloor mat is sometimes recommended, depending on the type of flooring you have.
Electric underfloor heating works by a combination of methods: radiation, convection and conduction.
Radiation: warmth is emitted by the underfloor heating mat and travels directly (in a straight line) to a point of absorption, in this case, the floor. As the floor warms, it radiates heat outwards. This then triggers the convection cycle.
Convection: as the underfloor mat heats the floor, the air that comes into contact with it warms and rises, allowing cool air to flow into its place to warm. The cycle continues until all air in the room is warmed evenly and efficiently.
Conduction: underfloor heating also uses conduction to heat. When the mat begins to warm, it transfers thermal energy between objects that come into contact with the heated floor such as your feet, carpet and rug.
You can get underfloor heating fitted in pretty much any home and under almost any type of flooring. Electric underfloor heating is much easier to install or retro-fit than a wet based system mainly because they are less bulky and don’t require a network of pipes to be laid. If you choose a wet underfloor system rather than electric, it’s best to install as the property is built. That way you don’t need to remove existing flooring and lay a complicated pipe network. Wet systems often require the floor to be raised as well to accommodate the bulk. Different manufacturers will have different levels of difficulty in installation. Rointe underfloor mats have been designed so that installation is quick and easy.
This all depends on the type of floor to be installed over the top of the underfloor heating mat.
The Milos systems are specifically designed for a ceramic or tiled floor and in some cases natural or quarry stone tiles. The mesh has a full surface adhesive and is adaptable to uneven floors. The heating cable diameters are only up to 3.5mm thick so won’t raise your floor level. We also sell an insulation system for the Milos that reflects heat upwards towards the floor surface.
The Erko system is designed for more delicate flooring types like parquet, vinyl, linoleum or carpet as it’s a foil-coated mat. Therefore, it must be installed with a suitable soft insulation material both underneath and on top of the mat. This prevents the heating mat from possible damage and also increases the efficiency of the Erko electric underfloor heating system.
Electric underfloor heating can be a little more expensive to run than water underfloor systems, but not as much as you might think. It really depends on your electric tariff. Sometimes shopping around for a better tariff is a good idea when installing electric heating systems like heated floors. You could also think about finding an electricity supply from a renewable energy source like solar panels to keep costs down.
Underfloor heating installation is typically cheaper than a wet system as there is no complicated pipe network fed through the mains water supply.
